Biological reserves of the island of the Meeting

To protect remarkable forest spaces from the island of the Meeting, the French State chose since 1981 for the creation of biological reserves. These spaces, managed by the , are partly open to the public.

Biological reserves the island of the Meeting

The forest is regarded rightly besides as one of the remarkable unspoiled sites of planet. Knowing that the human pressure (forestry development, urbanization, tourism) is increasingly important, since 1981 the French State decided to create specific save fields of the forest: they are the biological reserves. These spaces in constant increase in surface are classified according to two regimes of protection.

The first called directed biological reserves authorizes the access of the public within the strict framework of a duly controlled regulation. The second called integral biological reserves (.) are only accessible to the technicians and the scientists. Since 1985,11 biological reserves were created with the Meeting is a total of 37 002 ha protected in 2406 70% of the forest field, 13% of the surface of the island). In the medium term, surface in biological reserves should reach 14 010 ha.

Parallel to these territories, the island of the Meeting profits from two nature reserves (Pond-Long and Rock-Written). The creation of the National park Tops of the Meeting in March 2007 supplements the panoply of the shares of protection engaged on the site. The definition of biological spaces of reserves is carried out according to the characteristics in term of biodiversities and ecosystems of the sites. The majority of the current biological reserves extend on the forests from high-altitude (the core of the primary forest).

These particularly fragile spaces of primary forest are characterized by a faunistic and floristic interest exceptional on a world level. It is indeed there that the rarest species of the island concentrate, for the majority endemic and single in the world like many varieties of orchises, ferns and shafts. The protection carried out within the framework of the directed biological reserves aims in particular the fight against the proliferation of the imported species, directly concurrent of the indigenous species.

Operations of restoration of the mediums are undertaken on the sites in order to allow fauna and the flora to take again possession of the places. Framed paths of discovery are placed at the disposal of the public for a sensitizing. Within the framework of the integral biological reserves, the intervention of the man is limited to the specific elimination of new invasive species. The scientists go regularly on the sites to perfect the inventory list of the still unknown species.
