Winter protection
The semi-rustic plants ( and the frost susceptible ones as the exotic plants (banana trees) must be protected for wintry time against the rain, the freezing and the wind, especially in the areas in the north of the Loire, or in the mountainous regions. This protection must be adapted to your area and your climate.
Certain plants known as rustic ( with can also suffer if they are installed in a been windy place, or if the winter is particularly rigorous.
The young plantations are more fragile the first years and must be protected. In the same way for the points of Clerc's Office as on the rose trees.
Several means can be used to protect your plants effectively:
-
A ridging using straw, of dead leaves, mould or ground makes it possible to protect your long-lived rose trees, your artichokes or your most fragile. You will adapt the height of the hillock to the plant.
-
Certain fragile bubbles with the low temperatures like the dahlia, the gladiolus, the must be protected by a good mulching if you leave them in place.
-
The installation of a tent using a veil of winter or of a transparent reservoir in figure tended makes it possible to protect several plants or from sowings at the same time and protects from the cold rain. In the case of a plastic reservoir, leave an opening for ventilation. The veil is tended by stakes to the four corners or is maintained by two stakes in the center.
-
The installation of a plastic tunnel is also interesting for the row
S of young sowings to the kitchen garden. -
The pots out of terracotta or of the funds of bottles of 5l can be used by depositing them with back on your long-lived by filling them of straw or dead leaves.
-
Use plastics with bubbles to protect your trunks from young shafts, shrubs or standard roses.
-
For the head of the young shafts or shrubs, you can use a plastic or a veil of wintering with which you will cover the foliage. You can also fill the bag of dead leaves or straw to increase protection.
-
For the plants out of vat, surround the vat of polystyrene to protect the roots. Put also between the pot and the ground to insulate it.
Winter protection perhaps withdrawn with the return of spring, in March if time softened. However, even if cold the most rigorous passed, the freezing can still strike, it is advisable thus to keep an eye on the weather and to give protections if the cold returned.
| The veil of wintering sold in the departments of the garden-centers is made out of flexible polypropylene. It thus has a ventilated texture which lets pass water, the plant receives moisture and especially it can breathe. What is not the case when you use a plastic reservoir, condensation is formed inside and rot risks it is large. You can especially put on in contact the veil with the branches of the plant when the foliage is not persistent. |

To protect a young rose tree planted recently, do not employ especially straw with the foot. I made of it the sad experiment and the plant rotted.
